Deaths are below their peak although they are ticking higher. Yesterday the number of reported infections was 180,450 and the death number was 683.

There is a sharp jump in new cases in Russia, and in St Petersburg and Moscow in particular. This is expected to continue for at least two more weeks. So far hospital admissions remain at a low level. The trigger for the spike in Omicron cases was the return of Russian tourists from New Year vacations.

Russia had a good holiday period with new daily cases halving from about 30,000 to about 15,000. That was probably also because of reduced testing during the holiday period. However, cases in Moscow jumped on 9-10 January, which may be caused by the Omicron variant, especially as people come back from overseas New Year vacations and return to work.
