Turkmenistan is a beneficiary of the rise in global energy prices and efforts to diversify supply by major importers. Serdar Berdymukhamedov was closely involved in policy while his father was the leader. No major changes are expected, at least not over the medium term.
The government is now actively trying to attract investors and financing into industries where the country has a competitive advantage: cheap gas, chemicals, electricity production and transport and agriculture because of its favorable geographical location. There is very little of interest for investors outside of these sectors.
Turkmenistan is now actively engaging with international investors, including the holding of showcase events, as it tries to attract more foreign investment. It is also trying to expand trade partnerships and has indicated a desire to join the WTO. President Berdymukhamedov has declared the slogan for 2020 as “Turkmenistan – The Home of Neutrality”.
